Central City I.P.A named the best beer in the 2008 CAMRA Vancouver awards

An ale that was fashioned to survive the long voyage from England to India during the British colonization. Hops, hops, and more hops this ale has an intense aroma and a long lingering finish. Drink as an appetizer on its own, or pair it with one of our heartier dishes.

A beer for the connoisseur, this is the Brewmaster’s choice.

Top-beer award lands in Surrey

By Michael Kane, Vancouver Sun Published: Monday, January 28, 2008

VANCOUVER - The best beer is in Surrey, the best brewpub is in Vancouver and the best brewery is in Victoria, according to members of the Vancouver chapter of the Campaign for Real Ale.

CAMRA British Columbia is an independent, voluntary consumer association dedicated to supporting traditional brewing.

Central City Imperial IPA from Surrey's Central City Brewing Co. was named the best beer in the 2008 CAMRA Vancouver awards announced Monday.

Brew master Gary Lohin of Surrey's Central City brewpub shows off the new IPA which won the award for best beer in B.C. by the Campaign for Real Ale.

IPA is India Pale Ale, a traditionally hoppy beer with a high alcohol content, originally brewed to withstand the two-month sea voyage to British troops serving in India.

The Imperial version produced by brewmaster Gary Lohin is also known as a double IPA with an alcohol content usually above 8.0 per cent. Lohin's brew comes in at 8.5 per cent.

"All the ingredients are essentially doubled," Lohin said in an interview. "All the flavours are just more intense."

Central City, located across from the Central City SkyTrain station, was also runner-up in the best local brewpub category.

Gastown's Steamworks Brewing Co. was named the best local brewpub and also won best seasonal beer for its Grand Espresso Stout which is currently on tap.
"The credit goes to our brewmaster Conrad Gmoser who has been a force of consistency and creativity," said Steamworks owner Eli Gershkovitch.

Phillips Brewing Co. in Victoria was named the best B.C. brewery.

The Whip Gallery Restaurant at Main and 6th in East Vancouver was named best local beer cafe, pub or restaurant, and was also cited for the best local beer event for The Whip Real Ale Sundays.

Boomer's Red Ale

Iceberg Copper

Steelhead Oatmeal Stout

The use of crystal malts lends this beer its flavour and colour profile. Tempered with hops from the United Kingdom, this English bitter is an appetizer on its own, or a fine accompaniment to a roast beef, pork or chicken entrée.

Alcohol by volume: 5.5%

A “malty sweet” member of the lager family that is brewed with an abundance of German “Munich” malt. Balanced with European hops, this copper-coloured beer has a dry finish and is an excellent choice with spicy dishes, pizza and rotisserie chicken.

Alcohol by volume: 6%

This Irish style stout is deep, dark, smooth and creamy. The use of oatmeal in the mashtun adds “silkiness” to the texture and body of this ale. Excellent paired with oysters, prime rib and your weekend brunch.

Alcohol by volume: 4.2%

Wally's Wheat

Station Porter

Red Racer Classic Pale Ale

An opaque and effervescent style of wheat beer that originated in the Flemish region of Belgium. Brewed with coriander seed and dried Curacao orange peel, this beer is light in body, with a refreshing citrus and spicy aroma. Best paired with lighter dishes and appetizers or drunk all by itself.

Alcohol by volume: 4.5%

A robust ale with coffee and chocolate flavours emanating from the use of highly kilned malted barley. Deep dark brown with reddish hues, this beer is best paired with beef, pork and chicken entrées.

Alcohol by volume: 6%

The beer lover’s pale ale. Big and bold with lots of flavour from the use of crystal malt and hops from the Yakima Valley in Washington State. A good pairing with pizza, prime rib, steaks, burgers and chicken.

Alcohol by volume: 5%

Raspberry Wheat Ale

Springboard Lager

Central City Premium Lager

Available in the Summer!

Infused with raspberries from the Fraser Valley, this amber wheat ale is crisp and clean with a subtle fruitness. The toasted crystal malt from England balances the
natural acidity of the raspberries producing a beer that is refreshing and a delightfully different taste experience.

This beer goes well with desserts, or when sitting

Alcohol by volume: 5.5%

Brewed in the tradition of the classic Bavarian Lagers of southern Germany.

This beer is crisp and clean with a “flowery” aroma that comes from the use of hops from the Hallertau region in Germany. A good choice to be paired with any of our entrées.

Alcohol by volume: 5%

Fresh beer now in cans. On sale in the Liquor Store or the pub for only $7.95 + deposit (6 Cans).
